Roger F. Steinert, MD - Chair

Roger F. Steinert, M.D. is an associate clinical professor of ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School and in private practice at Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston. He is a surgeon at the Boston Eye Surgery and Laser Center and at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. Dr. Steinert is known worldwide for his expertise in refractive, corneal and cataract surgery, and frequently serves as a consultant on these subjects. In the noted publication, The Best Doctors in America, Dr. Steinert is the only ophthalmologist cited in three separate areas: refractive surgery, corneal surgery, and cataract surgery. He is one of the original researchers of the excimer laser and began laboratory research on the excimer laser in 1983 and patient treatments as part of the original FDA studies in 1989. After performing over 1,000 PRK procedures, Dr. Steinert helped develop instrumentation and techniques in LASIK that have helped make LASIK the most widespread refractive surgical treatment. At the Boston Eye Surgery and Laser Center, Dr. Steinert personally performs over 100 LASIK procedures each month.

Dr. Steinert is the author of many publications, including four textbooks on surgery and lasers, over 30 book chapters, and 80 scientific articles. He lectures extensively in the U.S. and abroad, and has been a visiting professor at numerous academic and eye care institutions, including Yale University, Wills Eye Hospital, Doheny Eye Institute at the University of Southern California, W.K. Kellogg Eye Center at the University of Michigan, Georgetown University, and Universite Lavel, Quebec.

Dr. Steinert is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He is past Director of the Cornea Service at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. He is the Chairman of the Eye Surgery Education Council, the public education activity of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) Foundation, a member of the ASCRS Executive Committee and co-chair of the ASCRS Annual Symposium Scientific Program Committee; he is also a member of the Board of Directors of the International Society of Refractive Surgery. Dr. Steinert is a member of many professional organizations, including the New England Ophthalmology Society and the Association for the Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. Dr. Steinert sits on the Editorial Boards for three major Journals: Ophthalmology, The Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and Ocular Surgery and Laser Therapy.

Dr. Steinert received his undergraduate degree summa cum laude from Harvard University, and his medical degree from Harvard Medical School, where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha, the National Medical Honor Society. He served an internship in Medicine and Surgery at the Tufts-Newton Wellesley Hospital and completed residency in Ophthalmology at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary.
